Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Genius in Silver Lining for Unstable Lazio

The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy this past Saturday. The home side was losing against Torino, a team that had conceded a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their ongoing dissent in a continuous dispute with president Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Falling Apart?

Was the team's progress unraveling, or did there exist a binding element holding it together in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager this summer, only for him admitted that the management had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were facing for financial irregularities. Speculation that he might quit were not true, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.

Lazio became as messy on the pitch as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in their other opening fixtures, featuring the derby della Capitale. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to ascertain if they are improving or imploding.

Matteo's Unexpected Comeback

A single player continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio this season. He completed the last one on loan at Parma and, early this summer, his owning club were pushing for him to remain there for another season. The transfer ban necessitated a reconsideration. Lazio could not afford to reduce their roster with no new signings.

Cancellieri arrived originally under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those coming off the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed at the end of that season, subsequently claimed Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential but then not selecting him."

Discovering His Best Role

Perhaps the manager was persistently working to work out the nature of his skill set. Originally described as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri nevertheless spent most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
