Weather experts are saying a chilly start to the new year, with snow expected across much of the UK. Those celebrating are advised to wrap up as bitterly cold temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Celebrations Proceed In Spite of Forecasts

Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay events are planned to take place, a contrast to last year's postponement. This is in spite of yellow warnings for snow across northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so warmer clothes will be needed," said the national forecaster.

Displays Under Mostly Clear but Cold Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is set to be suited to fireworks displays, with dry conditions and clear skies. Temperatures are due to be cold, meaning additional clothing essential, according to forecasters.

To the north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not expected to hamper visibility for seeing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Extensive Weather Alerts for Friday

Heading into Friday, weather warnings are active for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• Transport is expected to be disrupted.
• Travelers are advised to allow extra time for journeys on the road.
• Disruptions and cancellations are expected on the transport network.

Readings Forecast to Plummet Further

Going into the new year, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are expected to drop further as wintry showers and strong winds are likely to batter the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is expected to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Medical Advisories Released

At the same time, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with temperatures expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials said this indicated the weather could to lead to significant impacts across health and social care services. This includes a likely increase in the mortality rate among the elderly or unwell or those in the older age groups.

The advice for all is clear: to welcome the new year in good health, dressing for the cold is utterly paramount.
