The Princess of Wales's Traditional Festive Musical Celebration Honours Community Volunteers

The Princess of Wales is hosting her customary festive musical service at Westminster Abbey, with guests including members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have supported their local areas.

The sizable congregation will enjoy a blend of festive songs, musical performances, and spoken word pieces from stars like award-winning actors.

Focusing on Kindness and Compassion

The central message of the concert, held in the glowing Westminster Abbey on the afternoon, is compassion and demonstrating care for others.

In the audience are Anna and Jonathan Cordiner, whose young girl was lost to a brain tumour, and who founded an organisation, a charity called Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to help households where there is a youngster facing a life-limiting condition.

"The dedication, empathy, and kindness you show, often discreetly and without words, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an extraordinary difference to the lives of others," the Princess expressed in a note prior to the concert.

A Gradual Return

The princess has been making her own gradual return to the public eye following her health challenges and treatment, recently giving her major oration since 2023, in which she reflected on recognising the "quiet, often invisible work of caring".

Performance and Potential

Guests arriving at the Abbey can listen to talented youth performers backed by the Future Talent charity, co-founded by the former royal to broaden opportunities for musical tuition.

An 18-year-old named Carys Wood, who performs on the trumpet and is from southwest Wales, has been assisted by the organisation, with grants helping towards instruments, tuition, and transportation expenses - and she said it was "amazing" to be playing at tonight's service.

"Pursuing music is often costly," the musician remarked. She is now studying at the renowned conservatoire, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to hone their artistic talents.

Generations Gathering

Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who is a euphonium player, will also be at the Abbey. "It's unbelievable that I get to perform here in front of so many notable figures," she said.

Within the audience will be people from various age groups.

That will feature nine-year-old Saphia Turner, winner of a prize for youthful altruism, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to raise money for community pantries.

Festive Decor and Performances

The Abbey has been decorated with handcrafted festive wreaths, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett helping to make them.

The musical lineup includes Katie Melua, choristers from Westminster Abbey and a nautical singing ensemble, the Fisherman's Friends, who said the opportunity to perform was "the icing on the cake for us."

This annual carol service will be aired by ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
